Christenbury Eye CenterCharlotte, North CarolinaAs Medical Director of Christenbury Eye Center, Dr. Jonathan Christenbury has offered Charlotte, North Carolina, residents quality ophthalmic care since 1987. He has completed more than 70,000 LASIK surgery treatments over the decades, offering patients permanent correction of their vision. Having participated in over a dozen FDA clinical trials on excimer laser, Jonathan Christenbury, MD, earned recognition a decade ago as the first East Coast ophthalmologist to perform the all‐laser IntraLasik procedure. He has conducted follow-up research with over 35,000 patients, determining the best LASIK option based on the rate of 20/20 or better vision correction and low retreatment prevalence. Dr. Jonathan Christenbury offers Christenbury Eye Center patients the iLASIK procedure, which offered the best sustained results of five available technologies. He creates the LASIK flap utilizing an IntraLase femtosecond laser, correcting vision with a VISX CustomVue laser. A permanent surgical treatment for vision deficiency, iLASIK has been approved by NASA for astronauts and military pilots, and by the FAA for pilots of commercial and private airplanes. Jonathan Christenbury, MD, offers patients who are not iLASIK candidates the alternative Visian ICL procedure. This fully reversible surgery involves the insertion of an intra‐ocular lens in the space behind the pupil. Offering an invisible and highly durable vision corrective, Visian ICL enjoys a satisfaction rate of over 99 percent. Dr. Jonathan Christenbury advises patients that vision recovery after Visian ICL surgery is extremely stable, taking one to four weeks, and that the lens can be replaced should future vision changes occur. Dr. Jonathan Christenbury earned his MD at the Duke University School of Medicine, remaining in Durham, North Carolina, after graduation to complete a medical internship at Duke University. After completing an ophthalmology residence at Houston, Texas’ Baylor College of Medicine, he returned to the Duke University Eye Center to pursue a fellowship opportunity. Jonathan Christenbury, MD, subsequently undertook advanced studies and research at the Department of Ophthalmology at the Jules Stein Eye Institute, UCLA School of Medicine. He co-authored the 1987 paper “Management of ptosis in chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia,” published in the journal Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. An active member of the Charlotte community, Dr. Jonathan Christenbury supports the efforts of the American Red Cross, Opera Carolina, the DeAngelo Williams Foundation, and local women’s homeless shelters.
