HIPAA-Compliant Information Technology, Jonathan Edwards
January, 2011
by Jonathan Edwards
In 1996, the U.S. Congress passed HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, which consists of two parts. The first section ensures that workers who lose their employment can retain health care coverage. The second section mandates standardization of electronic health care transactions and uniform identification of the companies and providers that pay for and offer health care services. The second section also includes a privacy rule and requires that health care data remain secure. As a result of HIPAA, some health care providers have adopted new technologies.
My company, DMS, offers a variety of industry-specific services, such as management of medical information technology. Our specialists possess expert knowledge regarding HIPAA and the related regulations for medical records and information technology. When clients outsource their medical data management to DMS, they can focus efforts on their core mission of providing effective care to patients.
In addition to being familiar with HIPAA regulations, our team has developed compliant processes for managing medical data. This means that we ensure the protection of each health care company’s patient records and we conduct our daily work using methods that assure quality. The authors of the HIPAA privacy rule sought to ensure that patient information could be shared with relevant parties without falling into the hands of identity thieves or others who could endanger patients. Balancing those two goals can seem tricky, but health care organizations can manage these objectives using the right medical information technology.
DMS can help your medical firm select the appropriate software, implement the technology, and maintain systems on an ongoing basis. For more information, please see dmstechnology.com.
