Currently working on her first novel, writer Julia Powell worked for several years as a lawyer before taking up writing full-time. She also pursued her interest in writing as a sports reporter for the campus newspaper. She then enrolled at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in History, graduating Summa Cum Laude and with Phi Beta Kappa distinction. During her time at Yale, Julia Powell pursued both her athletic interests and her passion for writing. She played intramural coed soccer and basketball, serving as captain of both teams; she also played coed football. A member and elected representative of St. Anthony Hall, a campus literary society, Julia Powell was also selected for a prestigious independent writing tutorial with National Book Award Winner Robert Stone. After her graduation from Yale University, Julia Powell served for a year as an AmeriCorps volunteer at the “I Have a Dream” Foundation in Portland, Oregon, before attending the Nieman Fellowship Writing Workshop at Harvard University from 2002 to 2003. During that year, she also wrote arts features, personal profiles, and political events as a Correspondent for The Cambridge Chronicle, as well as coached girls’ varsity and junior varsity soccer at Buckingham, Browne, and Nichols School. In fall 2004, Julia Powell earned a position at Stanford Law School, where she served as the Senior Development Editor of the Stanford Law Review. Again pursuing her athletic interests, she served as the captain of the Stanford Law School intramural soccer, basketball, and football teams. In 2007, she received her Juris Doctor from Stanford Law School. During her time as a law student, Julia Powell served as a summer intern with the Criminal Section of the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., where she researched and composed memos on sex trafficking, hate crimes, and color of law violations. She also served as a summer associate at Debevoise & Plimpton LLP in New York City, where she accepted a position as a full-time associate after earning her JD. Following two and a half years as an associate, Julia Powell left Debevoise & Plimpton LLP in 2010 to pursue her writing career.
