An accomplished executive in the oil and gas industry, Kathleen Hanafan also serves on the Board of Directors of the Dr. David & Bevelyn Mays Foundation. A nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of health in several communities, the Mays Foundation sponsors a number of programs designed to improve existing health services and increase levels of health education. Here is a brief overview of some of the programs organized by the Mays Foundation.
Health Screening Days: First established in 2000, Health Screening Days support public health efforts in underserved areas and regions in low socioeconomic standing. With more than 40 million Americans lacking access to basic health insurance and millions more with undiagnosed, life-threatening diseases, the need for health screening in low-income communities is one of the most pressing public health concerns today. The Mays Foundation sponsors Health Screening Days at a variety of organizations and institutions, including local community centers, schools, and youth sports leagues. In addition to providing free health screenings, the Mays Foundation also works with local leaders to establish effective health policies, assesses the particular needs of communities, and develops effective means of raising the standard of public health in the United States.
World AIDS Day Event: Between 2001 and 2005, the Mays Foundation served as a sponsor of the World AIDS Day event in Baton Rouge. The event, held every year on December 1 at the Leo Butler Activity Center, seeks to help residents of low-income areas of Greater Baton Rouge by providing valuable education about the prevention of AIDS. Additionally, the program provides resources and educational services to people who are HIV-positive.
Wellness Week: Founded in 2001 at Scotlandville and Istrouma Middle Schools in Greater Baton Rouge, Wellness Week brings together a wide variety of health care professionals to share their expert knowledge with schoolchildren. Through the Wellness Week program, the Mays Foundation gives young students the opportunity to learn about healthy lifestyle habits and ask their own questions about health-related matters.
Baton Rouge Primary Care: Through its Baton Rouge Primary Care Collaborative, a fully funded medical clinic located in a low income neighborhood of Baton Rouge, the Mays Foundation attempts to address some of today’s most pressing health concerns, including diabetes, HIV/AIDS, infant mortality, and heart disease.
