Dr. Kathye Light has served as a Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy in the College of Public Health and Health Professions at the University of Florida in Gainesville since 1993. An extensively published researcher, Kathye Light has been featured in Physical Therapy, Stroke, Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair (NNR), and Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation this year alone. Kathye Light has authored articles on a wide variety of subjects, including early and delayed constraint-induced movement therapy, the Wolf Motor Function Test, and the effects of tobacco use on gait and balance functions in older adults. Kathye Light has also traveled around the world to present before professional organizations and other audiences that can benefit from her research. Since the beginning of 2010, Kathye Light has traveled to Vancouver, Canada; Zurich, Switzerland; and Vienna, Austria in addition to domestic engagements. As a Professor, Kathye Light focuses on classes related to physical therapy, geriatrics, and neuroscience at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. At the University of Florida, Kathye Light teaches advanced Medical and Surgical Disorders, Therapeutic Exercise, Neurological Evaluation and Treatment, Posture and Locomotion, and Neurological Dysfunctions, as well as a number of independent student and applied research courses. Each year, Kathye Light works one-on-one with a multitude of students, guiding their academic pursuits and supervising their individual research efforts. Before her position at the University of Florida, Kathye Light acted as an Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the Department of Medical Allied Health Sciences’ Division of Physical Therapy. Kathye Light earned her Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from the University of Missouri and her Master of Science in Physical Therapy from the Virginia Commonwealth University. Beginning her doctoral studies at the University of Iowa, Kathye Light received a Doctor of Philosophy in Motor control from the University of Texas at Austin in 1988. In addition to her academic career, Kathye Light worked has served as a Physical Therapist at a number of institutions and was the Director of Physical Therapy at the Chesterfield County Nursing Home in Chesterfield, Virginia for five years.
