Katie Chamblee graduated Phi Beta Kappa and with Highest Honors from Swarthmore College with a double major in History and English Literature and a Concentration in Creative Writing. At Swarthmore, Katie was a Phillip Evans Scholar, received the Flack Achievement Award for outstanding academic and extracurricular performance, and the Paul M. Beik Prize for the year’s best example of historical writing for her thesis, Diluting Desegregation: Busing for Integration in Charlotte, North Carolina, 1965-2001. In 2006, she received the Harry S. Truman Scholarship for promise in public service.

Katie played Principal Flute in the Swarthmore College Orchestra and Baroque Ensemble. She performed in numerous theater productions, particularly in productions of Greek Tragedy and Shakespeare, and co-wrote and directed an original musical.

Katie is currently an Analyst at the New York City Department of Small Business Services, where she is working on a project to streamline the process of starting and operating business in New York City. She is meanwhile the Executive Director of The Village Education Project (www.villageeducation.org), the non-profit she co-founded in 2005 that provides a comprehensive educational program to students in rural Ecuador, and which is currently planning expansion to Brazil and Tanzania. For her work in Ecuador, Katie was awarded the Echo Foundation’s inaugural Young Hero of Hope award.

Katie hopes to combine her experiences in domestic and international development for a career in urban social policy worldwide. She currently plans to seek a join degree in law and public policy.
