In my position as Vice President of Managed Care at Catholic Healthcare West (CHW) in San Francisco, California, I oversee 20 hospitals representing $1 billion in managed care revenue. CHW maintains a network of hospitals, physicians, and clinics extending throughout California, Nevada, and Arizona. Comprising more than 60,000 doctors, nurses, and staff, its primary aim is to care for the sick, the disadvantaged, and the poor. San Francisco-based CHW was founded in 1986 and in the past 25 years has grown into the largest hospital system in California, and the 8th-largest provider in the U.S. CHW has pioneered several community-based initiatives, improving its responsiveness to the people it serves. In 2005, CHW created the first-ever Community Need Index (CNI) in partnership with Thompson Reuters, correlating levels of need to every zip code in the U.S. Not only does the CNI pinpoint areas of health care need, but it identifies barriers standing in the way of quality care, including level of income, education, housing, language, and insurance. CNI scores are assigned to each zip code-defined community, with 1.0 representing little need, and 5.0 the most severe situations. CNI is currently being integrated with Catholic Healthcare West services, as we seek to understand and solve the underlying reasons for lack of healthcare in some U.S. communities. Another source of great pride at CHW is its intellectual property assets. We have many dedicated medical researchers among our physicians committed to advancing the state of medical science in ways that benefit us all. Recognized innovators within the CHW health care system include Arthur C. Craig, Ph.D., inventor of the Vagus Nerve Stimulator, and Registered Nurse Karen Jenkins, who invented the Flexible Arm Immobilizer. CHW actively encourages industry and technology innovators as partners, helping provide state-of-the-art care at an affordable price. Outside of my career as a healthcare administrator with Catholic Healthcare West, I derive a great deal of satisfaction from spending quality time with my family taking in Northern California’s natural beauty. Among the numerous physical activities I enjoy, hiking stands apart as one of my recreational pursuits of choice. As a longtime Bay Area resident, I revel in the opportunity to explore the glorious expanses of beach and forest that surround San Francisco, a truly scenic city ideally located in close proximity to numerous coastal hiking trails and state parks. A city known for its spectacular views, San Francisco sits only a short distance away from Angel Island State Park, the largest land formation in the San Francisco Bay.

Easily accessible by ferry, Angel Island State Park once functioned as a military base and immigration center. Designated as a National Historic Landmark today, Angel Island State Park offers visitors incredible views of San Francisco’s unique city skyline, Mount Tamalpais, and the Marin County Headlands. Sparsely populated and well preserved, Angel Island was nearly destroyed in a terrible fire that broke out on October 12, 2008. Spreading over 100 acres in the span of 1 hour, the fire eventually decimated 250 acres, amounting to approximately one-third of the entire island. Thankfully, firefighters contained the blaze after two days, saving the landscape from ruin. In an effort to restore Angel Island to its original state, state and local agencies are currently undertaking aggressive root and branch extraction in hopes of rehabilitating the area’s original oak forests and grasslands.

In additional to the many hiking trails that wind through the island, numerous other recreational options beckon visitors to Angel Island State Park. Dotted with several small campsites, Angel Island State Park boasts distinction as a favorite destination for local bicyclists, 13 miles of trails available for riding. The perfect vantage point from which to watch migrating whales in their natural habitat (with the assistance of a good pair of binoculars, of course), Mt. Livermore stands at an elevation of 788 feet. To reach the summit of the mountain, simply follow the Northridge/Sunset Trail Loop. Whether you live in the Bay Area or are only visiting, I highly recommend setting time aside for a day trip to Angel Island. For more information about this natural gem, I suggest utilizing the information available on Bay Area Hiker’s website as a guide.
