Musician Kiyanu Kim Discusses Alternative Rock , Kiyanu Kim's Blog on Bigsight
November, 2011
A renowned musician, Kiyanu Kim owns and operates 3PMusic Production in New York City. Kiyanu Kim’s label works with artists from a wide range of musical genres. In the following, he discusses alternative rock.
Defining a musical genre can be tricky. When people consider different types of music categories, they might develop a standard list: rock, country, rap, classical, folk, and others. Each of these popular categories has a host of subcategories, expanding the number of genres exponentially. Most of those subcategories contain sub-subcategories, further expanding the list. Instead of focusing on every single category of music out there, we can examine the sub-subcategories of one of the genres or rock music: alternative rock. Musician and producer Kiyanu Kim dissects the genre of alternative rock, pairing different styles with the musicians who made them famous.
1. Post-Punk: On the heels of the punk rock pioneers of the 1970s, post-punk artists maintained a high level of energy in their songs while managing to inject experimental elements. Post-punk musicians often mixed the traditional rock instruments, guitar, bass, and drums, with synthesizers for varying effects. Famous artists in this genre include Joy Division and Echo and the Bunnymen.
2. New Wave: A direct “descendant” of punk music from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, new wave music is often considered pop music that is easier to digest than its sister genre, post-punk. New wave music, believed to have begun in the late 1970s, was characterized by the use of synthesizers. Some artists in the genre include Duran Duran, The Pretenders, and A Flock of Seagulls.

3. Goth Rock: Often referred to as gothic, this genre of music was the dreary offshoot of post-punk. Typified by dark, religious symbolism, the goth rock genre lasted less than a decade in the early 1980s. Goth rock managed to pass on dark, even macabre fashion styles, which last to this day. This genre of music was spearheaded by popular bands such as The Cure and Siouxsie & The Banshees.

4. Grunge: Combining heavy metal, punk, and 1970s guitar stylings, the grunge music movement exploded onto the scene in the 1ate 1980s. Originally considered a “hard” genre of music because of its dense, affected guitar work, grunge lightened up as it was adopted into the mainstream with various bands, including Nirvana and Pearl Jam.
