Crossing the Border: Dealing with Cultural Transition, Kristina Ruiz-Healy
April, 2011
After growing up in Mexico City, Kristina Ruiz-Healy moved to Texas. Although she possessed the language skills necessary to ease her transition, she nevertheless underwent a period of culture shock. Entering an entirely new country forces an individual to rethink each action as he or she learns to best interact with that new culture.
In college, Kristina Ruiz-Healy grew to understand NAFTA, the economic crisis, and its long-term ramifications. Cultural transitions continued as, after attending Mills College, Kristina Ruiz-Healy moved from California to Texas, two states with personalities and politics entirely of their own.
Throughout her life experience, Kristina Ruiz-Healy has always believed that at heart, humans share many of the same desires, no matter what their individual backgrounds may be; it is simply a matter of finding mutual understanding. That is one of the primary messages Kristina Ruiz-Healy tries to spell out with her series, A View from Two Countries.
