Prepared to embark on long careers as entrepreneurs, Larry Starr and his brother started a Cellular One franchise in 1983, establishing themselves as early innovators in this market. Following the success of this business, Larry Starr sold his holdings in 1988 and invested the capital in Longboat Accommodations, a vacation rental company. Larry Starr quickly expanded this enterprise from 30 properties to several hundred in a few short years, as he fastidiously sought out new buyers and insurance agents. Larry Starr’s success can be partially attributed to his focus on marketing; he paid close attention early on to the ratio of successes of phone inquiries and to the emergence of the Internet as a medium of business. After his business grew into the largest vacation rental enterprise on Florida’s west coast, Larry Starr renamed his company Florida Vacation Accommodations in 1999. In March 2001, Larry Starr decided to sell his company to ResortQuest International, an expanding property management company. For his strong entrepreneurial record, Larry Starr was given the salaried position of President of ResortQuest Southwest Florida. After spending much of the past decade at this job, Larry Starr now serves as the President of Resort Vacation Accommodations, which sees him handling strategic planning and marketing duties for the largest vacation rental company in southwest Florida. Larry Starr also works in the field of real estate; in 1989, Larry Starr became President of Real Estate Resource of Southwest Florida, located in Sarasota. This project saw Larry Starr developing properties in communities such as Silver Sands, Cabana Beach Club, and The Beach, which are all located on Longboat Key, as well as Bradenton Beach’s Beach Club Anna Maria and Siesta Key’s Beach Club. As of 2008, Larry Starr has served as a managing member of the real estate business Realty One Alliance.
