Marc's Status Updates

Highly regarded for his in-depth knowledge of modern-day conflicts, Marc Garlasco has appeared frequently on major news networks such as ABC, CNN, the BBC, PBS, and NPR. Marc Garlasco has been interviewed by the press, and he has also spoken on the radio about a number of humanitarian issues surrounding wars in the Middle East and elsewhere. Serving first with the Defense Intelligence Agency and then with Human Rights Watch, Marc Garlasco has operational field experience in Burma (now Myanmar), Afghanistan, the Gaza Strip, Georgia, Iraq, Lebanon, and Kosovo.

Marc Garlasco’s field duties included collecting information on the effects of weapons, negotiating with warring parties, and analyzing military positions. Marc Garlasco also led substantive intelligence undertakings while employed by the Defense Intelligence Agency. In particular, Marc Garlasco was in charge of the Pentagon’s efforts to locate and capture Saddam Hussein during the Iraq War.

An expert in international law, Marc Garlasco has played major roles in a number of policy development initiatives. Marc Garlasco was deeply involved in negotiations for the Convention on Cluster Munitions, which led to a declaration signed by more than 100 nations in 2008. Marc Garlasco has also advised American senators, including John McCain and Patrick Leahy. For Senator McCain, Marc Garlasco provided information that helped to pass detainee treatment legislation, and for Senator Leahy, he assisted in improving U.S. efforts to reduce collateral damage. Marc Garlasco has also briefed Pentagon, White House, and United Nations officials.

Marc Garlasco studied Government & Politics at St. John’s University in Queens, New York, and International Affairs at The George Washington University. Following graduation, Marc Garlasco accepted a position with defense contractor TECHMATICS, Inc. before being hired by the Defense Intelligence Agency in 1997. After achieving the rank of Chief of High Value Targeting, Marc Garlasco joined Human Rights Watch as a Senior Military Analyst. Marc Garlasco has sat on the boards of humanitarian nonprofit organizations, including the Countess Moira Charitable Foundation and the Campaign for Innocent Victims in Conflict (CIVIC).
