A supporter of worthwhile causes, Marietta Franzese contributes to American Cancer Society. Founded in 1913, the American Cancer Society was established by physicians and business leaders in the New York area, and was initially called the American Society for the Control of Cancer (ASCC). Up to that time, Cancer remained a disease that equated to a certain death sentence.

Rarely discussed, most individuals knew little about cancer, and fear and denial plagued those who were diagnosed. Aiming to create awareness and raise funding for research, the American Cancer Society was welcomed by the medical community. Not long after, mainstream magazines and publications began producing articles on the subject, spurring interest and furthering education on the topic.

Later, in the 1940s, the society’s research campaign began to receive significant funding, enabling groundbreaking research on the treatment of cancer. Achieving the first case of temporary remission, the American Cancer Society opened the door to modern chemotherapy treatments, setting the stage for many groundbreaking achievements Since that time, medical professionals have been able to identify common risk factors associated with the disease, including smoking, exposure to harmful chemicals, and other variables.

The American Cancer Society also played a huge role in instituting the National Cancer Act, signed into legislation in 1971. Assuring the allocation of designated funds to fight the spread of cancer through research and education, the National Cancer Act expanded the National Cancer Institute and contributed to a now internationally recognized program for cancer research.
