Maruska Albertazzi on E! Entertainment International, Maruska Albertazzi's Blog On Bigsight
February, 2011
As a freelance writer and journalist, I was fortunate to spend several years as a reporter for E! Entertainment International in Rome, Italy. The network served as the Italian version of the American network, E! Entertainment Television. The cable channel focuses on shows that highlight what is happening in the world of entertainment: movies, television, fashion, gossip, and the music industry.
During my tenure at E! Entertainment International in Rome I regularly traveled to premiers and film festivals where I interviewed celebrities as they walked the red carpet. Additionally, I filmed interviews with many celebrities such as Sophia Loren, Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep, and Giancarlo Gianna.
Currently, E! Entertainment Television produces all its shows within the United States; however, in the past the network had multiple offshoots around the world. Larry Namer and Alan Mruvka launched E! Entertainment Television in 1987. Originally they called the network Movietime, and it focused on coverage of award shows as well as aired movie trailers, entertainment news, and celebrity interviews. In 1990, the network became E! Entertainment Television and its scope widened to include all forms of entertainment and celebrity news.
Comcast has owned E! Entertainment Television since 2006 although many major players in the entertainment industry have owned shares in E! Entertainment Television since its inception, including HBO, Time Warner, Warner Brothers, and the Walt Disney Company. E! Entertainment Television boasts nearly 700 million viewers worldwide.

Italians at the Oscars by Maruska Albertazzi
April, 2011
by Maruska Albertazzi
Foreign films have an entire category set aside for them at the Academy Awards, so it is rare to see a film produced outside of the United States gain recognition in one of the open competitions, such as Best Picture or Best Actor. Italy boasts a long tradition of artistic excellence, and this applies to the silver screen as well. Throughout the years, Italian actors, directors, and other film professionals have garnered an impressive number of Academy Awards outside of the Foreign Language Film category. Here are some of the most notable:
Anna Magnani: The first Italian woman to win an Academy Award, she received the honor in 1955 for her portrayal Serafina Delle Rose in the adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ The Rose Tattoo.
Sophia Loren: In 1961, Sophia Loren became the first actress to win the Best Actress Oscar while appearing in an Italian-language film, Two Women. She garnered another nomination three years later for her performance in Matrimonio all’italiana (Marriage Italian-Style). Roberto Benigni: It took several decades for an Italian to win the Best Actor Oscar, with Roberto Benigni earning the distinction for his riveting performance in La vita e bella (Life Is Beautiful). He received another nomination for his work as the film’s Director.
Bernardo Bertolucci: Best known as the Director and Screenwriter of the film The Last Emperor, an epic portrayal of the demise of China’s dynastic system, Bernardo Bertolucci has written and directed several renowned films. The picture won nine Academy Awards, including Best Director and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium. Bernardo Bertolucci also directed Last Tango in Paris and The Conformist.
Others: Italians have also fared quite well in some lesser known Oscar categories, including 11 wins for Costume Design. Cinematography is another strong suit, with Vittorio Storaro earning the accolade from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences three times. Italians have won Best Music Oscars on six occasions too, including for the films Top Gun, Flashdance, and The Godfather: Part II.
