One of my favorite authors is the American thriller and suspense novelist Greg Iles. Born in Germany, Iles was the son of a United States Embassy employee. He was raised in Mississippi, and subsequently graduated from the University of Mississippi. Before embarking on his career as an author, Iles was a musician. After getting married, however, Iles quit his band and started working on his first novel, Spandau Phoenix. Published in 1993, Spandau Phoenix became a New York Times bestseller. Iles has since authored seven other New York Times bestseller books and his novels have been published in countries around the world. Today, Iles continues his interest in music by playing with the band The Rock Bottom Remainders, which is composed entirely of authors, including Stephen King, Amy Tan, Matt Groening, and James McBride.

A classic Iles novel is the thriller The Footprints of God. The story follows a secret government project called Trinity that is working to produce a supercomputer. When one of the scientists working on the project dies, it is revealed that the project’s ultimate goal is the merger of man and machine to produce the ultimate computing power. The Footprints of God is concerned with David Tennant, the project’s ethical caretaker, who unearths this goal. He is subsequently pursued for his knowledge as he struggles to learn more about Trinity. Tennant also struggles with regression episodes, which his doctor claims to be seizures caused by overexposure to MRI machines. Through extremely vivid dreams, Tennant witnesses the birth of the universe and the history of mankind, and eventually starts to see unsettling present day events that prove to be reality rather than dream. The Footprints of God is an engrossing novel that pulls you in, and does not let you go until you reach the last page .
