  • Dr. Melissa Schwarzschild: Causes of Prematurely Aging Skin
    May, 2012
There are some factors of aging skin (known as intrinsic aging) you cannot control, such as genetics and slowed collagen production. While these changes can begin as early as your 20s, you may not notice the effects until much later. Extrinsic aging factors, on the other hand, are a reflection of your habits, and you have a great deal of control over them. These factors may make your skin age at a rate faster than your genetics have scheduled. Below are several extrinsic causes of aging.

    1. Sun exposure can cause many changes to your skin, including wrinkling and discoloration. The best way to minimize “photoaging” is to wear sunscreen that blocks out the sun’s UVA rays and minimize your unprotected sun exposure.

    2. Smoking can cause deep wrinkling due to biochemical changes in the body. The best protection is to stop smoking, or never start.

    3. Sleeping on your side with your face pressed to a pillow in the same position for years can also cause wrinkles over time. To minimize this problem, try sleeping on your back instead.
