About Syosset, New York & Oyster Bay, Michael Ferrari
March, 2011
by Michael Ferrari
One of my favorite pastimes is laying out either by the pool or the ocean; I particularly enjoy making trips to the beach with my wife and children, soaking up the sun and spending quality time with one another. I live in Muttontown and work in Syosset, New York. Both towns are ideally located near Long Island’s popular North Shore beach spots.
Syosset is a 10-minute drive from Oyster Bay and 15-minutes away from Bayville. Peppered with sandy beaches, Oyster Bay and Bayville attract crowds of visitors and tourists on hot summer days. Bayville was incorporated as a village in 1919. Famous for its Pine Island oysters, Bayville also has entertainment venues, eateries, and sandy shorelines, which makes it a tourist hot spot for beach-goers in the area. Oyster Bay is a town along the North Shore within Nassau County that includes the villages of Mill Neck, Centre Island, and Bayville in its territory. It was settled by the Dutch and named so because of the many oysters found in nearby waters.
90% of New York State’s harvested oysters are farmed in Oyster Bay. Theodore Roosevelt lived in a village close by, with his wife Edith, and is honored by several tributes around the town. Today, Oyster Bay is home to the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park, which leads up to Oyster Bay Harbor. Many local historic buildings related to the 26th President of the United States have been restored to preserve and applaud his contributions to the country. These buildings include the Oyster Bay Long Island Rail Road Station and the Octagon Hotel.

Landscaping with Hostas, Michael Ferrari's Blog on Bigsight
April, 2011
Hostas grow best in the northern and central parts of the United States, where the temperature does not become extremely hot or cold. Hardy foliage perennials, hostas flourish in shady regions and require very little upkeep. They are also virtually immune to diseases and grow rather quickly, which means they can be regularly divided and replanted. Depending on the variety of hosta, it may produce gorgeous flowers that attract a range of wildlife from hummingbirds to butterflies. Hundreds of different hosta types exist in different colors, shapes, and sizes, allowing them to be matched to any garden aesthetic.
In order for your hostas to thrive, especially considering the hot summers and frigid winters in Syosset, New York, plant them in either the spring or autumn months. Be sure that they are located mostly in the shade and keep the ground moist until their roots have expanded into the earth in your yard. Once hostas have taken root, they require almost no maintenance aside from occasional fertilization. If you want to divide and replant a hosta, you will be most successful in the fall when the new plant will have all winter to establish its roots. While you may have success with hosta division in the spring, the new division is likely to take all season to start really flourishing.
Because there are so many different hosta varieties, their landscaping possibilities are endless. A simple green leafy variety is a luscious way to line a garden or fill in empty space, but you can also plant different species into interesting patterns and complementary leaf colors.

Located just 30 miles east of downtown Manhattan, and under two miles outside of Queens, Syosset is a hamlet on Long Island in Nassau County. “Hamlet” is generally used to describe an unincorporated community that exists within the confines of another town and is delineated by its own name. A number of public figures have called Syosset home in the past, and still more reside there today. Syosset can claim such luminaries of the entertainment industry as Academy Award-winning actress Natalie Portman; Ian “Aesop Rock” Bavitz, a noted hip-hop musician; director and screenwriter Judd Apatow; singer Alicia Keys; and Emmy winner Jay Bienstock, producer of TV’s The Apprentice and Survivor. According to many of its 20,000 residents, Syosset is an open, friendly community, where neighbors develop a habit of helping and supporting one another. Michael Ferrari feels at home in this atmosphere and actively seeks out opportunities to assist other families nearby. In the winter, he helps clear his neighbors’ driveways of snow.
