About Michael Toler

A professional educator, scholar, and writer, Michael Toler received his PhD in Comparative Literature and a Certificate in Translation Research and Instruction from Binghamton University.

From 2001 until 2010, Michael Toler served as Program Director and Chief Program Officer at the National Institute for Technology in Liberal Education (NITLE), now located in Georgetown, Texas. Throughout his tenure with NITLE, Michael Toler had varied responsibilities. He conducted in-depth research on topics such as developments in educational technology, international education, and social media, and presented or published his findings for a non-profit organization, with the goal of advancing liberal education through technology and inter-institutional collaboration.

Michael Toler’s numerous academic achievements during his time with NITLE included his leadership role in the creation and management of the Arab Culture and Civilization Online Resource. As Managing Editor, he oversaw development of the online portal with articles and media focusing on the culture and civilization of the Arab world. The website provides access to material on numerous topics, such as history, literature, and philosophy; popular culture and the performing arts; art and architecture; the Arabic language; and family and society. Through Michael Toler’s dedicated leadership, the Arab Culture and Civilization website has become an invaluable resource for liberal arts education around the globe. It is now hosted by the Middle East Policy Council and can be found at acc.teachmideast.org.

Michael Toler’s professional background includes educator positions with the Institute of Global Cultural Studies at Binghamton University; the School of Arabic at Middlebury College; Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco; and Chouaib Doukkali University in El Jadida, Morocco.

Michael Toler has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, including “Extending the Campus: Al-Musharaka and Technology-Assisted Collaboration,” printed in The Bulletin of the Middle East Studies Association; “Translation as Cultural Representation: The Case of the Maghrebi Novel in English,” printed in The Journal of North African Studies; and “Literature, Art and a Country in Crisis,” printed in World Literature Today in 2006. His other works include “The Devouring Ogre: Tahar Djaout on the Writing of History,” published in The Creative Circle Artist, Critic, and Translator in African Literature and translations of short stories by North African writers.

Complementing his scholastic efforts, Michael Toler maintains memberships with numerous professional organizations, including the Middle East Studies Association, the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education, the American Literary Translators Association, the Association of American Colleges and Universities, the African Literature Association, the American Association of University Professors, the Tangier American Legation Museum Society, and the International Society for Technology in Education.

Outside of his professional duties, Michael Toler maintains an active lifestyle by bicycling, hiking, canoeing, and exercising. Michael Toler is also a blogger and active in social media following developments in politics, media, and popular culture in the US and internationally.
