  • 2011 L.A. Auto Show Brings High Expectations, by Michael Schackett
With leaves falling on the ground, the change of seasons means that a new auto show season has started, the most prominent being the Los Angeles Auto Show. The L.A. Auto Show, previously known as The Greater Los Angeles Auto Show, began at a skating rink in 1907, where it grew exponentially with the brand-new automotive industry. Continuously run since 1952, the L.A. Auto Show brings in some of the world’s most prominent car manufacturers to debut new vehicles and display new concepts that serve as the basis for their research and development projects. Held this year from November 18 to November 27, the L.A. Auto Show commences with two days of exclusive access to the press and industry, followed by a Sneak Preview Night before the general opening.

The 2011 L.A. Auto Show stands out in introducing new concepts and vehicles. According to various press reports, at least 21 vehicles will make their world debut at the L.A. Auto Show, and at least 4 more will make their North American debut. In addition, seven concept cars will grace the floors of the Los Angeles Convention Center. These cars and concepts will vary, and they will benefit drivers of all types. Many leading manufacturers, as well as some up-and-coming manufacturers, will display their vehicles as being representative of what they wish to sell to the North American auto market.

The selection of new vehicles ranges from completely new production models to simple power train upgrades of current models. The average car shopper can look forward to redesigns of the Hyundai Azera, Honda CR-V, and Ford Escape. Subaru, Honda, and Volkswagen all intend to announce completely new models at the L.A. Auto Show, and Chevrolet will debut its new minicar, the 2013 Spark, on the show floor. The City of Los Angeles, a proponent of electric vehicles, hopes for Chinese manufacturer BYD to make an appearance at the L.A. Auto Show. On the luxury side, Mercedes-Benz will debut some new production models, including the ML63 AMG, and Cadillac will display the XTS, its replacement for the DTS and STS. Among the concept cars making appearances at the L.A. Auto Show are the Volvo Concept You, the Lotus Evora GTE, and BMW electric concepts i3 and i8.
