Financial regulator working for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission

In late 2009, Norman Champ was named the Associate Regional Director for Investment Management Examinations in the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) New York Regional Office (NYRO). In this capacity, which he formally began in January 2010, Mr. Champ led a staff of about 100 accountants and examiners in the inspection of investment advisers and investment companies in the New York area.

More recently, Norm Champ has been promoted and now serves as the Deputy Director in the Office of Compliance Inspections and Examinations for the SEC. His increased responsibility includes the management of more than 800 examiners in 12 offices throughout the United States and overseeing several exam programs of the SEC. During his time with the SEC, Norm Champ has been a panelist on examination topics at various programs including those put on by the Practicing Law Institute, the New York City Bar Association and other organizations.

Prior to joining the SEC, Norman Champ spent 10 years with Chilton Investment Company, an international investment adviser and hedge fund manager. He continues to lecture at Harvard Law School, where he has taught since 2008. Mr. Champ teaches a winter term class on private fund investment management law to second and third year law students. His focus is on fund formation and operations, marketing, and federal securities law.

Norman Champ graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University and was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study at King’s College London, where he earned his Master’s in War Studies. Mr. Champ then earned his law degree from Harvard, where he graduated cum laude in 1989.
