Nitrous Oxide, Dr. Omar Abdo's Blog on Bigsight
July, 2011
Dr. Omar Abdo, an experienced prosthodontist with his own practice in Jupiter-Palm Beach, Florida, performs a wide variety of dental and cosmetic procedures. In addition to knowledge about traditional procedures, such as fillings and bonding, Dr. Abdo possesses a considerable background in cosmetic dental procedures, such as dental implants, porcelain veneers, and teeth whitening. In many procedures, Dr. Abdo prepares patients for advanced procedures with nitrous oxide, a gas that serves as a sedative.
First synthesized by Joseph Priestly in the 18th century, nitrous oxide has played an integral role in dentistry for more than 200 years. Although Humphry Davy discovered in 1800 that nitrous oxide had the potential to relieve pain in humans without causing a loss of consciousness, the gas did not gain general acceptance in the medical community until 1844, when doctors began to use it as a form of anesthesia. A large number of dentists began to utilize nitrous oxide throughout the rest of the 19th century, including Gardner Quincy Colton, whose clinics administered the treatment to more than 25,000 patients in only three years.
Today, nitrous oxide has become one of the most widely used anesthetics in dentistry. In modern applications, patients inhale a combination of oxygen and nitrous oxide, often in a 30-70 ratio of gas to oxygen. After breathing the nitrous oxide mixture, patients experience a dulled pain sensation while remaining conscious. In addition to dental procedures, such as oral surgery, where nitrous oxide can significantly reduce pain in the soft tissue of the gums, the gas is also widely used in cases of trauma, childbirth, and acute coronary syndrome.
In modern dentistry, there are numerous advantages to using nitrous oxide. Throughout the procedure, the dentist and his or her staff can control the depth of the sedation to decrease or increase the effects of the nitrous oxide. Inhalation sedation with nitrous oxide can greatly minimize gagging, has no adverse effects on the heart and lungs, and involves no aftereffects. Because some patients may find nitrous oxide sedation uncomfortable, Dr. Abdo recommends prospective clients ask a dentist for a short trial period to experience the effects of the gas. Above all, patients need to disclose all medical conditions and discuss other health concerns with their dentists before proceeding with nitrous oxide sedation.

Dr. Omar Abdo Discusses Dental Bonding , Omar Abdo's Blog on Bigsight
August, 2011
An experienced prosthodontist, Dr. Omar Abdo assists patients at the Jupiter Institute for Prosthodontics and Implant Dentistryin Florida. Dr. Abdo offers a variety of cosmetic and reconstructive services, including implants, inlays and onlays, veneers, and bonding.
Bonding corrects the appearance of cracked, misarranged, or discolored teeth. The cosmetic procedure covers natural flaws and can even rectify mild misalignment. Prosthodontists adept in the techniques utilize it to help patients preserve their natural teeth. Tooth bonding offers a long-lasting solution to surface defects.
Bonding involves the use of a composite resin that can be used to fill decay, reshape teeth to create a more aesthetically pleasing appearance, and lighten or whiten stained teeth. The prosthodontist begins the bonding process by coating the tooth with a thin layer of plastic that adheres to the bonding material. The prosthodontist sculpts the bonding material to create the form he wishes to achieve based on the shape of the patient’s natural teeth and the look that would be most pleasing in conjunction with his or her facial features. Once the prosthodontist achieves the desired appearance, high-intensity light hardens the bonding material and the surface is polished.
The ideal candidates for bonding include those with uneven teeth, receding gums, and decay. Bonding also remains ideal for patients with cracked or chipped teeth, as well as those with gaps in between their front teeth. The bonding material may also be used to permeate small grazes in tooth enamel that collect staining material, thus whitening teeth.

“Bonding provides patients with an affordable and effective correction for problems that they feel affect the attractiveness of their smiles,” Dr. Omar Abdo said.
