As a physician practicing in Houston, Dr. Pamela Johnson specializes in preventive medicine with an emphasis on women’s health and skin care. She offers non-surgical rejuvenation therapies, including Botox.

First approved by the Food & Drug Administration for cosmetic use in 2002, Botox effectively treats wrinkles, including glabellar frown lines and brow furrows. Millions of people have used Botox injections to minimize the appearance of wrinkles. Although Botox improves the appearance of skin, its effects are actually deeper.

Over time, the dermis (the middle layer of skin) thins, and the underlying subcutaneous fat layer begins to disappear. This makes the top layer of skin less elastic. These changes mean that, over time, smiling and frowning can lead to wrinkles.

Botox targets the facial muscles that create wrinkles. Derived from the bacteria Clostridium botulinum, Botox effectively relaxes muscles by blocking the receptors that receive signals to contract.

A round of Botox injections decreases the appearance of facial lines for several months, but the effects eventually wear off. However, repeated treatment with Botox can train the muscles to relax, so wrinkles are often less noticeable when they do return
