Epictetus
November, 2010
by Patrick Marzo“It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.” – EpictetusThis quote by Epictetus describes my life philosophy. Born a slave, Epictetus is remembered by history as one of the most influential Greek Stoic philosophers of all time. He believed that philosophy is not just a theory; it is a way of life. Epictetus wrote that fate determines events that happen to us, and all we can control is what we do afterwards. Epictetus dealt with difficult experiences from birth. Not only was he a slave, but Epictetus also suffered a leg injury that left him handicapped for life. After obtaining his freedom, however, Epictetus began to teach philosophy in Rome and eventually settled in Nicopolis, in southern Epirus, Greece. Epictetus’ most famous pupil Arrian later wrote the Discourses of Epictetus, based on his studies with Epictetus. According to the Discourses, Epictetus believed that philosophy is rooted in self-knowledge. Only our opinions can bring us unhappiness, as he explained in his quote, “What is to cry and to weep? An opinion. What is misfortune, or a quarrel, or a complaint? All these things are opinions….” Famous figures in history who were influenced by Epictetus’ teachings include Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, who often quoted Epictetus in Meditations; writer James Joyce, who mentioned Epictetus in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man; and psychologist Albert Ellis, founder of the Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy method, who cited Epictetus as one of his inspirations.
