An Overview of TIME magazine by Perry Bacon
June, 2011
Perry Bacon, political journalist and writer, has written for a number of prominent American publications, including The Washington Post and the Louisville Courier. He also spent a significant portion of his career writing for TIME magazine at the company’s Washington bureau location.
TIME magazine remains as one of the largest and most iconic news magazines of today. The weekly publication possesses an audience of over 20 million within the United States and 25 million on an international scale. While the periodical is circulated throughout the world, TIME magazine originated in America and focuses on both national and international topics on hard news, politics, entertainment, and pop culture. TIME magazine also now produces a European, Asian, and South Pacific edition, known as TIME Europe, TIME Asia, and TIME South Pacific.
Founded in 1923, TIME Magazine was created by two men, Henry Luce and Briton Hadden. With the aim of creating an informative, yet fun publication, Luce and Hadden set out to disseminate news through the voice of individuals. In fact, for many years, the cover included the image of a single person that represented the tone and focus of that particular issue.
Of particular interest to readers of the magazine, is TIME’s “person of the year,” which recognizes “the person who, for good or ill, has most affected the course of the year.” In past years, individuals such as President Barack Obama, Franklin Roosevelt, and even Joseph Stalin, and Adolf Hitler have received this title. Albert Einstein was named Person of the Century in 1999.

Perry Bacon Covers Heath Care
May, 2012
A prominent political reporter and journalist in the Washington, D.C. area, Perry Bacon continues to address the pressing topics of today’s political scene. Since 2008, he has paid special attention to the healthcare debate with a deep focus placed on Republican and Democratic demands and agendas. Articles written by Perry Bacon on this subject include; “Why Health Care Won’t Create a New Class of Obama Backers,” “The Health Care Angst,” and “Obama vs. the House Republicans.”
As of recently, the healthcare debate has gained an immense amount of media attention due to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), which was passed into legislation in March of 2010. This new law has received immense amounts of praise and criticism from both parties, further sparking the healthcare debate within the United States.
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was put in place as a means to provide individuals with more affordable access to healthcare while doing away with inefficient and costly insurance practices, such as pre-condition screening, annual coverage caps, and premium loadings. This healthcare reform also established a new set of standard practices that insurance companies must adhere to. The PPACA aims to support private healthcare providers in an effort to provide more options to individuals of any economic status.
