Philip H. Brown is a widely published scholar and educator in the field of development economics.Washington, District of ColumbiaAs a development economist, Philip H. Brown specializes in the area of economics dedicated to the study of poverty and the pursuit of strategies to raise the standard of living for impoverished peoples. Brown has spent many years conducting research in China, Chile, Central America, and Africa, living side by side with the population he studies. A prolific writer and researcher, Phil Brown has received grants for economics research projects from the National Science Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, and the Ford Foundation, among others. Brown began his academic career at Colorado College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in International Political Economy, graduating magna cum laude in 1993. During his undergraduate years, Phil Brown studied abroad in Zimbabwe, which gave him unique insight into the effects of the global economy on developing countries. Moved by his experience, Phil Brown pursued a Master’s degree in International and Intercultural Management from the School for International Training in Vermont. After his graduation, Brown traveled to Tanzania to assist at a camp for Rwandan refugees who had fled the African country’s tumultuous civil war. As Camp Manager for the International Rescue Committee, Philip Brown utilized his graduate training while gaining valuable experience in international management. A year later, Philip H. Brown applied his economics expertise to serve as a Consultant for HelpAge Zimbabwe, a group that supports elderly Zimbabweans by providing economic development tools. Setting his sights on a humanitarian-focused career in economics, Phil Brown gained entrance to the University of Michigan, where he obtained his Ph.D. in 2003. His dissertation, “Poverty, Education, and Intrahousehold Bargaining: Evidence from China,” was well received. Individual dissertation chapters have appeared in the Economics of Education Review, Economic Development and Cultural Change, and the Journal of Human Resources. To date, Philip Brown has authored or co-authored 27 additional academic articles in multiple languages, and he also served as co-editor of the China Economic Review.
