The Foreign Policy Association, Philip Pilevsky
March, 2011
A dedicated member of the Foreign Policy Association (FPA), Philip Pilevsky lectures on foreign policy at New York University and wrote two books on the subject, Captive Continent: The Stockholm Syndrome in European-Soviet Relations and I Accuse: Jimmy Carter and the Rise of Militant Islam.
Since its founding under President Woodrow Wilson in the wake of World War I, the mission of the Foreign Policy Association has been to achieve peace through education and discussion. In the years immediately following the organization’s inception, a team including Eleanor Roosevelt and John Foster Dulles expanded the focus to international studies, promoting a deeper understanding of the world and international issues among the American people. While the specific programs advocated and instituted by the FPA have changed over the years, the group’s core mission remains constant.
At the onset, the extent of the group remained minimal, consisting of Saturday lunch and discussions at New York City’s Astor Hotel. The discussions quickly grew and the group started producing a series of popular publications: the Foreign Policy Bulletin, Foreign Policy Reports, and the Headline Series.
As the FPA grew, so did its efforts to disseminate foreign relations information to the public. The goal was accomplished through several mediums, including the NBC Network’s weekly radio discussion program, The World Today. In 1954, the FPA founded the Great Decisions program, now one of the leading centers for international affairs education in the world. Still one of the cornerstones of the FPA’s work, an annual Great Decisions briefing book is utilized by publicly held discussion groups in communities around the country. In addition, the Great Decisions program also maintains a television series on PBS.

Atlantic Council, Philip Pilevsky
May, 2011
Philip Pilevsky, a successful real estate development executive with more than three decades of experience in the field, also serves as an adjunct professor at New York University. A well-respected lecturer and educator in real estate and foreign policy, Philip Pilevsky has also written two books on contemporary foreign policy in Europe and the Middle East. In addition to his work as a professor with NYU, Philip Pilevsky belongs to the Atlantic Council, an international affairs think tank and public policy group located in Washington, D.C.
According to its mission statement, the Atlantic Council promotes American leadership and seeks to give power to important policy ideas. To accomplish its mission, the Atlantic Council encourages dialogue among nations regarding important issues, supports constructive U.S. leadership by publishing thorough policy analyses, and organizes educational exchange programs to give future U.S. leaders an international perspective.
Founded in 1961 as a way to promote U.S. leadership on the world stage, the Atlantic Council initially set out to establish cooperative relationships with European countries during its early years. During this time, the Atlantic Council focused its activities on creating policy papers and conducting polls of Americans and Europeans on their attitudes towards international issues. Although the majority of its early work centered on economic issues and free trade agreements, the Council performed occasional research on environmental and political concerns.
Since its inception, the Atlantic Council has focused on Asia as well as Europe and the United States, acting as one of the first organizations to call for greater Japanese participation in the international economy. In recent years, the Council has established the Program on Asia and the South Asia Center to further expand its policy research in Asian countries. The Council has also performed extensive coordination work with India and China concerning climate change initiatives.
The Atlantic Council has made a number of important contributions to American foreign policy in the past, including shaping responses to events in the Atlantic community and leading the charge for cooperative environmental protection. In addition to engaging students from the Atlantic area in the transformation process of NATO, the Council has also provided guidance for U.S. policy toward Russia, China, Korea, Taiwan, the Balkans, Africa, Cuba, Iraq, and Iran.
