Smithsonian National Museum of American History

 

The National Museum of American History, located on the Mall, collects artifacts of all kinds, from gowns to locomotives, to preserve for the American people an enduring record of their past.
It has more than 3 million artifacts in its collection. Information and photos of selected objects is available in the online collections database. Popular artifacts include the original flag that inspired Francis Scott Key, a Southern Railway steam locomotive, coins from the National Numismatic Collection, quilts, the MASH signpost, Richard Petty’s 200th victory car, and Dorothy’s ruby slippers from the film The Wizard of Oz.
