The National Mall

The National Mall is an open-area national park in downtown Washington, D.C. Officially termed by the National Park Service as the National Mall & Memorial Parks, it includes the Reflecting Pool and often is taken to refer to the entire area between the Lincoln Memorial and the Capitol, with the Washington Monument providing a division slightly west of the center. It also includes the Jefferson Memorial, the FDR Memorial, the WWII Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, and the Vietnam Memorial. The idea for the National Mall was originally conceived by L’Enfant in his plans for the city of Washington, D.C., created in 1791. However, his ideas were not realized until the beginning of the 20th century.

Historic rallies, protests and speeches have taken place at the Mall including Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream” speech. It also has long served as a spot for jogging, picnics, and for annual events such as the Capitol Fourth celebration on July 4. During Presidential Inaugurations people without tickets gather there to watch within sight of the Capitol.
