The Phillips Collection

The Phillips Collection was the first museum of modern art in America. It opened in 1921 when collector Duncan Phillips opened his Dupont Circle brownstone to the public. The collection now numbers over 2500 works including those by Van Gogh, Monet, Degas, Cezanne, El Greco, Picasso, Matisse, Klee, Rothko and O’Keeffe. Auguste Renoir’s “Luncheon of the Boating Party is considered the highlight of the collection. The Museum specializes in exhibitions that feature the work of new contemporary artists.
