Chief of Adult Deformity Service at Southern Illinois UniversitySt. Louis, MissouriSince August 2011, RaKerry Rahman, MD, has served as Southern Illinois University’s Division of Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation’s Adult Deformity Service Chief and Assistant Professor of Spinal Surgery. Prior to accepting his current position, Dr. Rahman completed a Spine Surgery Fellowship in St. Louis with the Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University Orthopedics. During this time, he notably provided instruction on Current and Emerging Issues in Complex Lumbar Spine Surgery. RaKerry Rahman, MD, earned his BS Chemistry at Florida A&M University in 2000, summa cum laude. He next completed an MD with honors and distinction in research at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry. He received research grants from the American Medical Association and the Office of Medical Education. In 2003 and 2004, Dr. Rahman earned first place for basic science in the Wilbert C. Jordan Research Forum. He also achieved distinction with a Process of Discovery Award and served as a Bristol-Myers Squibb Academic Medicine Fellow. In the latter capacity, RaKerry Rahman, MD, studied “The Role of Interleukin-1 in Particle Mediated Inflammatory Bone Loss” at the University of Rochester Musculoskeletal Research Center. He gained membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society in 2004. RaKerry Rahman, MD began a five-year affiliation with Columbia University’s NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City in 2005. Completing an Orthopedic Surgery Internship, he conducted four years of post-doctoral residency training at Columbia University. He notably undertook a two-year research project, “The Effect of Ovariectomy-Induced Estrogen Deficiency in Accelerating Greater Tuberosity Osteopenia and Supraspinatus Tendon-to-Bone Healing at the Footprint in a Rat Model.” During his last year at Columbia University, Dr. Rahman moved into a position as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery Residency. In 2009, Dr. Rahman volunteered on a complex spine surgery medical mission to Ghana through the Foundation of Orthopaedics and Complex Spine.
