Screenwriter

Los Angeles, California

A screenwriter who has worked extensively in both feature films and television, Randi Mayem Singer is best known for penning the screenplay to the 20th Century Fox blockbuster film Mrs. Doubtfire.

Randi Mayem Singer grew up in Palos Verdes, California, and received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley. Before selling her first script, she worked as an on-air reporter and news anchor at such Los Angeles radio stations as KRLA, KRTH and KFI, using the name Randi Allison. It was during this time that Randi Mayem Singer pursued screenwriting at the UCLA Extension Writer’s Program and began writing her first screenplay, A 22¢ Romance.

A 22¢ Romance won Randi Mayem Singer the inaugural UCLA Diane Thomas Screenwriting Award in 1987, a competition judged by such entertainment icons as Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis, Michael Douglas, James Brooks and Kathleen Kennedy. A 22¢ Romance sold in a bidding war to Orion Pictures for Dennis Quaid to star. Although A 22¢ Romance has never been produced, it was listed in the January 1992 Los Angeles Times Calendar section’s “Best Still On Paper” article, as an industry favorite among unproduced screenplays, similar to today’s annually updated “Black List” screenplay roster.

Based on the considerable buzz of her A 22¢ Romance screenplay, 20th Century Fox hired Randi Mayem Singer to adapt Anne Fine’s young adult novel, Alias Madame Doubtfire, to the screen. Directed by Chris Columbus and starring Robin Williams and Sally Field, Mrs. Doubtfire became one of the highest grossing comedies of its time. Mrs. Doubtfire took the number two spot behind Jurassic Park for 1993, grossing $219 million domestically and $441 million worldwide.

Randi Mayem Singer has since worked nonstop on numerous feature films and is a highly sought-after rewriter and “script doctor” known for reworking and polishing movie scripts prior to production. Randi Mayem Singer has taught screenwriting for UCLA’s graduate screenwriting program and has guest lectured at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts.

Randi Mayem Singer also has an active television career as a writer, producer, and showrunner, which includes creating and executive-producing the sitcom Hudson Street (1995) for ABC and the comedic drama Jack & Jill (1999–2001) for the WB. Jack & Jill starred Amanda Peet, Ivan Sergei, Justin Kirk, Sarah Paulson, and Jaime Pressly. Despite a vocal online campaign by loyal fans after its second season, Jack & Jill did not return for a third season.

Currently, Randi Mayem Singer is working on several projects for various studios, including the upcoming romantic comedy Wish List for Walt Disney Studios, set to star Academy Award-winner Reese Witherspoon.
