One question that frequently arises in Christian schooling is why worldview training is so important for today’s youth. The answer to this query reflects the evolving nature of modern education and the media influences children are exposed to on a daily basis.

Half a century ago, in virtually any part of the globe, parents were by far the most important influence on children. This influence could be for good or bad, but it was predominant in the children’s lives. Today’s society is so saturated with media and focused on secular programming that parents’ voices are diminished. The broader culture–a mix of music, education, television, and the Internet–has become the primary influence on children’s worldviews.

Many families of faith feel alarmed that the messages this broader culture sends out, seeking to capture children’s hearts, are increasingly anti-Christian. We see a clear illustration of this pervasive secular influence in the children of professing evangelicals who go through the public school system. By the time they graduate from secular colleges, 80 percent of the young people brought up in active Christian households wind up rejecting the faith.

To counter the increased presence of non-Christian voices in society, parents need to be highly proactive, teaching what God calls on them to teach their children. Deuteronomy Chapter 6 contains an excellent example of this core Christian commitment to education. Speaking through Moses, God tells his people to talk with their children about who God is, what he requires, and what he has accomplished. These God-centered messages are what parents must reinforce in their children’s daily lives.

God’s words through Moses provide a key example of God’s design. When parents abdicate their central role in educating their children about God, they are engaged in “responsibility drift.” Christian parents certainly have many obstacles to overcome in instilling a Bible-centered worldview, including a society hostile to Christian messages and a worldly Church that often compromises its message in an attempt to appease the secular culture. Despite these hurdles, the simple message of teaching children about God, continually and directly, resounds with many Christian parents.
