Mitchell

Supporting African Development Activists and Communities

Rebecca is an activist scholar currently attending medical school at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). Her interests include health policy, health systems, economics, and journalism. She plans to also pursue a joint Master of Public Health Degree in health policy and economics during medical school. Along with work in the single-payer health system movement, Rebecca is also an active member of Universities Allied for Essential Medicine (UAEM) and coordinates a Bioethics course for UCSF students. She also continues to serve as the Executive Director of SPANAfrica, a non-profit organization she founded as an undergraduate which supports grassroots development work in Africa, specifically around youth and entrepreneurship.

Rebecca graduated with honors from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in 2007 with a BA in Biology, Society, and the Environment. She was chosen as a 2006 Truman Scholar, 2007 Fulbright Fellow, and 2007 Luce Scholar, named to the 2007 USA-Today All-USA Academic First Team, and selected as one of the Top 10 College Women by Glamour Magazine in 2006.
