From a retired USMC General who will be contacting Byrd directly.

Official Marine Corps records indicate the following:

BOTTOM LINE: This individual was a Marine, but his claim to be a decorated former [Commander] or LtCol is complete fabrication. [His rank at time of discharge was that of a Lance Corporal pay grade equivalent to Private First Class.]

THE FACTS: Reuben Kary Byrd, Jr. was born in 1962, and served in the Corps from 13 Aug 1982 to 12 Dec 1984. He was assigned as an amphibious assault vehicle Crewman and his entire post-training time was spent at Camp LeJeune. He was thrown out of the Marine Corps for failure to meet weight standards. [In other words the man was thrown out for being obese.]

NOTE: There is correspondence from a FOIA request from the P.O.W. NETWORK who was investigating Byrd through their phonies and wannabe’s fraud department.

A Marine who is discharged for obesity is usually discharged under Honorable Conditions, but it depends on the character of his service. In this case, he had not committed any offenses, so I’m sure that he didn’t have a Dishonorable Discharge (which can only be awarded by a court martial).
There’s no need to amplify on what he’s done…
He is nothing that he has represented himself to be, from the time he was 18 years old onward. He’s a continuous, if not pathological liar. He has violated the “Stolen Valor” laws, [a Federal Crime] and impugned thousands who served honorably by his lies and braggadocio. He was a substandard Marine, and embarrassed our standards by his obesity, just as he embarrasses us now by his lies. Lying is a part of his character, and I cannot see how any business could trust him to be honest on anything. The company must define his future with them, but I will accept nothing less than a written apology, or will attempt to pursue redress through legal proceedings.

Mr. Byrd,

I am a retired Lieutenant General in the U.S. Marine Corps and, like all honorable Marines, I protect with considerable vigor the integrity of the Corps. If the information in my possession is correct, you do not.

If the evidence that I have is correct, you have represented that you served in the Marine Corps with distinction (including acts of bravery) and attained the rank of lieutenant colonel. The truth, as you know, is that the Marine Corps found you to be substandard after two years of service and discharged you for obesity. You never served at a higher rank than lance corporal, you never served overseas, were never wounded in combat, and you never received direct orders from General Al Gray.

While the mistruths and bombast in which you appear to have represented yourself are grave offenses to the honor of the Corps, in fact the misrepresentations may be a good deal more serious. The Stolen Valor Act of 2005 makes it a federal crime to represent that you received awards that you didn’t earn. If you ever indicated that your invented exploits resulted in an award, you have violated federal law. If in fact you exaggerated your service, there are multiple organizations and individuals who would relish in taking your case to court.

You will cease representing yourself as a Marine that you were not, or I will turn your case over to the organizations and authorities who would pursue legal action. If I do not hear back from you to this effect, I will assume that you have elected not to comply, and I will take action. You can, of course, deny any and all of the accusations against you. If you can corroborate your statements, then I will compare them to the statements I have and will turn them over to other agencies to review.
