Richard Pichardo's Schools

  • Barry University , Class of 2001

I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Business and Public Administration from Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida. The school is the brainchild of a Bishop of St. Augustine; the Rev. Patrick Barry; and the Prioress General of the Dominican Sisters of Adrian in Michigan, the Rev. Mother M. Gerald Barry. The two pioneers secured support from the pastor of St. Patrick’s Church in Miami Beach, the Rev. William Barry, and the city’s mayor, John Thompson. In the spring of 1940, a 40-acre lot in a residential neighborhood was designated the campus for Barry College. The school was not officially deemed a university until just over 40 years after it was founded. Today, the university is a celebrated and accredited co-educational institution that supports the studies of about 9,000 students. With over 2,000 administrators and faculty at the university, all students have access to an incredible support system and small student-to-professor ratios encourage close and productive relationships. Throughout its history, Barry University has met the needs of both its students and community through the development of notable nursing, teacher education, medical technology, and social work programs. Barry University adheres to a strict level of educational excellence and continues to develop its service for the community through the addition of many graduate programs, a Continuing Education Program, a School of Business, a School of Podiatric Medicine, a Division of Biological and Biomedical Sciences, and most recently, a School of Law. In order to keep up with the consistently expanding education offerings at Barry, the campus has more than tripled in size from its original 40 acres. Barry is now host to state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor athletic facilities, complementing the more than 50 housing and educational buildings.
