Richard Raley on the National Defense Transportation Association
January, 2011
by Richard Raley
I actively participate in The Association for Global Logistics and Transportation, also known as the National Defense Transportation Association (NDTA). With more than 9,000 individual and corporate members worldwide, NDTA serves as a nonprofit organization and assists industrial, governmental, educational, and private agencies that provide transportation and logistics for the U.S. distribution industry.
NDTA directs these efforts in order to help the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), the U.S. Department of Transportation, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security maintain national safety. Founded in 1944, NDTA supports its members by offering a forum through which they can gain and share knowledge, via both formal educational opportunities and networking. The association maintains 60 chapters throughout the United States, Middle East, Asia, and Europe and supports six national committees titled Military Airlift, Military Sealift, Surface Transportation, Passenger Travel Services, Military Distribution, and Security Best Practices.
Since its inception nearly 65 years ago, NDTA has accomplished a number of notable objectives. The Military Airlift Committee collaborated with the DOD to develop the National Airlift Policy, which President Reagan signed in 1987. The Surface Transportation Committee facilitated a pilot program to improve transport security by utilizing the Defense Biometric Identification System, an access system that produces identification cards for verification purposes. Individual NDTA chapters work with local chapters of The American National Red Cross to enhance regional emergency preparedness. In order to maximize its efforts on behalf of national security in the U.S., NDTA’s vision encompasses the global transportation system and the logistics involved on a worldwide scale, thus making NDTA a great resource for its members. Becket Fund for Religious Liberty
February, 2011
A supporter of numerous nonprofit organizations, Richard Raley remains involved with the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, an organization dedicated to religious freedom for all. Established as a public interest law firm, the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty operates mainly throughout U.S. court systems, through academic endeavors, and by way of public opinion. Striving to protect “the free expression of all religious traditions,” the organization believes strongly that no person should be denied the basic human right to practice religion of any kind. The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty also asserts that every individual should be treated equally, regardless of his or her faith or religious beliefs.
Established in 1994, the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty was founded by Kevin Hasson, a former Justice Department employee. Hasson formed the organization after defending The Catholic University of America and its decision to fire a staff member on account of his opposition to church doctrine, even though he was a well-regarded and respected professor and theologian.
In past years, the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty has advocated for Muslims in the European Court of Human Rights and has also worked with the UN Economic and Social Council, as well as the UN Human Rights Council. The organization also focuses on court appeals regarding religious freedom issues in conjunction with the Hindu American Foundation, the American Civil Liberties Union, and the American Jewish Congress.

American United Logistics: Offering Dedicated Port and Transport Services by Richard Raley , Richard Raley's Blog on Bigsight
May, 2011
As President and CEO of American United Logistics (AUL) since 2003, I oversee inland cargo freight shipping throughout the Middle East, primarily Iraq and Kuwait. AUL operates as a multi-million dollar enterprise with headquarters in the Kuwait Free Trade Zone. My firm engages in active partnership with the U.S. military, utilizing employees with logistics expertise to expand efficiencies associated with commercial operations throughout the region. Most notably, AUL provides a distinct asset in its private-sector ability to adapt quickly to technological innovations, often operating without extended operational lead times.
A striking example of American United Logistics’ regional impact is found in its secure staging and warehousing facility at the Iraqi port of Umm Qasr. Prior to the adoption of this maritime transport facility, the Army ferried materials and equipment from Kuwaiti ports and warehouse facilities. This required long truck convoys with a hand-off in control and security increase at the Iraqi border. The result was a complex, time-intensive, and resource-draining military logistics system. Routing through Umm Qasr has expedited and consolidated transport, allowing valuable Army resources to be allocated elsewhere in the Iraqi theater.
AUL’s South Port compound at Umm Qasr offers 31,750 square meters of dedicated warehouse space, as well as substantial hard-stand and hard-compact staging areas. Additionally, the Iraqi railroad has an entry point within the secured staging area, allowing for direct loading of railroad cars.
AUL operations are beneficial to the community in which we operate. We partner with the Iraq Port Authority (IPA), providing economic benefits through utilization of IPA manpower and services. Paying all applicable IPA port and general cargo fees, we maintain secured berthing at IPA berth five. In addition, we have undertaken significant capital investments in the hard-packed staging area and railroad gate areas of the port, benefiting the IPA.
Naturally, there are registration hurdles to transporting supplies through battle zones. American United Logistics works these out efficiently, complying with all military requirements. We deliver inland distribution services that include private security details, ensuring safe transport to Iraqi Forward Operating Bases. AUL is also contracted to provide container repair and restencil duties in Kuwait. This increases military transportation capacity on the Kuwait border, supporting force surge requirements.
