A senior executive with Cisco, Rick Snyder actively supports the efforts of the National Dance Institute (NDI). Earlier this year, NDI honored the telecommunications giant at its yearly event by granting its Corporate Honoree Award to Cisco. Rick Snyder accepted the award on behalf of Cisco.

Jacques d’Amboise, a classical dancer and principal instructor at the New York City Ballet, developed NDI in 1976 to teach children about the importance of dance and to allow them to attend classes and watch shows free. In NDI’s third year, over 400 of its students, along with Mikhail Baryshnikov and Judy Collins, performed at the Felt Forum at Madison Square Garden.

NDI continued to expand throughout the 1980s and featured over 1,000 children on stage during its 1982 event. Throughout this decade, Kevin Kline, Mary Tyler Moore, Cloris Leachman, and Tony Randall all participated with the group. Also during this period, d’Amboise received an invitation to the White House from First Lady Nancy Reagan. In 1986, NDI held its first cultural exchange by inviting more than 50 children from China to dance with its students.

Continuing its remarkable achievements into the 1990s, NDI obtained an honor from Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, who named June 3, 1991 National Dance Institute Day. Subsequently, d’Amboise garnered a Kennedy Center Honor, visited the White House again on behalf of the Clintons during their Greek State Dinner, and obtained a National Medal of Arts from President Bill Clinton. George W. Bush’s administration later presented the NDI creator with a Coming Up Taller Award from the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities.

Today, NDI continues its commitment to providing youths with an education in the arts, and it annually holds major events that celebrate cultures around the world. Still affiliated with dancers in China, the NDI used Cisco TelePresence software to run virtual performances involving both nations last year.
