I am very proud of my association with Heifer International. As a cattleman, I have been able to combine one of my skills with community service and philanthropy. I currently serve as President of the local chapter I formed of this fine charity, which seeks to eradicate world hunger via gifts of livestock and animal management training for impoverished families.

In doing so, the organization helps economically disadvantaged families around the world gain self-sufficiency while improving their nutrition and income potential. Likewise, the families Heifer International reaches participate in helping others as well. When they receive donated livestock, the family agrees, in turn, to donate one of that animal’s offspring to the project. This allows for exponential growth of the foundation’s worldwide mission.

My chapter has donated approximately 400 animals to the program, which works all across the globe. The organization’s approach focuses on sustainability, environmentalism, and social justice. Through the sustainable zero-grazing method, Heifer International teaches families to provide small shelter spaces for their animals and bring foods to them. Families are encouraged to remove the manure from the animal’s space and sell it as fertilizer, thus generating additional income. The zero-grazing method protects livestock from disease, predators, and theft while making it possible for families to use their land for crops rather than grazing.

With its carefully considered mission, Heifer International creates long-term solutions to hunger and poverty. Recognizing the dignity of the participants in its program, this nonprofit allows those in need to become part of the solution.
