About Rikki Lynn Halavonich

With an excellent academic record and enthusiasm for psychiatry, Rikki Lynn Halavonich has enjoyed a great deal of success during her forensic psychiatry career.

Attending the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Rikki Lynn Halavonich maintained a 4.0 grade point average and graduated at the top of her 1996 class. An Alabama native, Rikki Lynn Halavonich returned to the Yellowhammer State to enroll in the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham. Upon graduating with an M.D. in 2001, Rikki Lynn Halavonich received the Senior Award for Excellence in Pediatrics and the Senior Award for Excellence in Psychiatry.

Following receipt of her M.D., Rikki Lynn Halavonich accepted an internship at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in 2001. Completing her internship in June 2002, Rikki Lynn Halavonich remained with MUSC and began her residency in general psychiatry. Contiguous with her residency, Rikki Lynn Halavonich became Outpatient Chief Resident in 2004. Rikki Lynn Halavonich then entered a forensic psychiatry fellowship that lasted from July 2005 to June 2006.

Rikki Lynn Halavonich accepted the position of Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences for the Institute of Psychiatry at MUSC after finishing her forensic psychiatry fellowship. In addition, Rikki Lynn Halavonich acted first as Associate Department Director of the Forensic Psychiatry Division and then Department Director of the Forensic Psychiatry Division for MUSC’s 2007-2008 academic year.

In July 2008, Rikki Lynn Halavonich left MUSC to practice at Lowcountry Forensic Psychiatry, LLC in Charleston, where she practices today.

    Before joining Lowcountry Forensic Psychiatry, LLC, Dr. Rikki Lynn Halavonich completed her medical degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine, where she received accolades for her work in pediatrics and psychiatry. She completed her residency in general psychiatry and a fellowship in forensic psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina.     UAB’s Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital recently earned classification as the nation’s only Level I ocular trauma center by the American Society of Ocular Trauma (ASOT). The Foundation Hospital serves approximately 2,200 patients annual with eye trauma. To receive the ASOT designation, the Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital must offer around-the-clock emergency service capabilities and ensure that internal medicine and infectious disease practitioners are easily accessible to assist the facility’s onsite nursing and physician staff.

    U.S. News and World Report recently rated several of the programs at the UAB School of Medicine as the Top 10 in the nation in the 2012 edition of America’s Best Graduate Schools. The UAB School of Health Professions’ health services administration program placed 5th in the nation, while the School of Medicine’s primary care program rose to the 10th. Other UAB areas to receive high praise in the annual ranking included the School of Medicine’s geriatrics, internal and rural medicine, occupational and physical therapy, and AIDS programs. More than 1,200 programs and 9,600 academics and professionals participated in the America’s Best Graduate Schools survey.

    The UAB’s student-run medical group, Equal Access Birmingham, will hold its second annual 5K roadrace in May 2011 to raise money for care programs for Birmingham’s underserved populations and to promote healthier lifestyles. Equal Access Birmingham’s long-term goals include establishing a student-run free clinic on the campus of the UAB School of Medicine.
