As a dedicated supporter of youth sports for more than 35 years, I have volunteered as a football, basketball, and baseball coach for various summer camps in Pennsylvania, including the football camps at my alma mater, The Pennsylvania State University. Widely recognized for the storied Nittany Lions football team, coached since 1966 by the redoubtable Joe Paterno, Penn State also boasts a variety of summer football camps for students in junior high and high school.
Launched in 1975, when I was working toward my Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Medicine, the Penn State summer programs have grown to include Football Camps I and II, the Senior Camp, and the 7-on-7 Team Passing Camp. To focus attention on skill acquisition and technique development, all Penn State football camps feature limited physical contact. At the four-day Football Camps I and II, open to students entering grades 8 through 12, participants receive instruction in offensive and defense techniques through drill sessions, demonstrations, and lectures designed to help them improve their basic abilities.
Promising senior athletes in high school can also enroll in the Senior Camp, a two-day option that focuses on building skills specific to one of eight individual positions. Finally, the 7-on-7 Team Passing Camp allows up to 30 high school teams and their coaches to participate in controlled scrimmages and work with Penn State coaches on drills, techniques, and conditioning. In addition to attending daily sessions at the state-of-the-art University Park athletic facilities, resident campers stay in the Penn State residence halls for the duration of their programs.
Many of the players on the current Nittany Lions roster are graduates of the Penn State football camps, and I’m proud to have contributed to the winning tradition of Penn State football by working with student athletes to develop skills that will serve them well in football and in life.
