Exalt founder Dr. Robert Mansueto works hard to help other health care professionals create retirement savings from funds that would otherwise be lost to unnecessary tax or risk investments. Endosseous implants—implants embedded directly into bone—date back more than a thousand years, to the ancient Mayans. In the first part of the 20th century, researchers in Honduras found a partial skull of a young female from the ancient Mayan era and noticed that she had three pieces of shell in place of three teeth. Originally thought to have been a death ritual, these fragments were proven by a Brazilian professor of dentistry to have been implanted when she was alive.

Needless to say, we have come a long way from using shells to replace missing teeth. Throughout the 1800s, professionals tried a variety of alloys, including gold and platinum, to fill sockets from which teeth had been extracted. However, long-term success rates for these procedures were extremely low.

In the years following World War II, a doctor by the name of Norman Goldberg opened a dental practice in Providence, Rhode Island, where he began to experiment with certain metals and develop prototypes for a new generation of implants. He collaborated with Dr. Aaron Gershkoff to develop subperiosteal implants, implants that are placed on top of the jawbone but beneath the gums. They constructed their first subperiosteal implant in 1948.

The following year, they published an article in Dental Digest, thoroughly describing their research and successful implementation of their technique. The piece sparked great interest among dental professionals throughout the country. After conducting more research and putting together material for almost a decade, Dr. Gershkoff and Dr. Goldberg released the first implant dentistry textbook in 1957.

Owing to the success of their research and their ambition to improve the field of implant dentistry, these 2 doctors, along with 11 fellow dental professionals, founded the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) in 1951. Today, implant dentistry is recognized as the preferred tooth replacement method, and the AAID boasts a team of over 3,500 individual practitioners, specialists, general dentists, and others.

Dr. Robert Mansueto worked in implant dentistry for over 30 years. He currently presides over and runs Exalt, a financial services company for health care professionals. He earned his degree in 1976, when he was just 23 years old, becoming the youngest person in the United States to graduate with a D.D.S. In 2000, he became a Fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry.
