• Mr. Olympia: "Where Legends Are Made", Ron Kramer ThermoLife January, 2011 by Ron Kramer ThermoLife [Posted by Bruinpena10] In September 1965, physical fitness enthusiast and magazine publisher Joe Weider held the inaugural Mr. Olympia bodybuilding competition. Created so that winners of the prestigious Mr. Universe contest could continue earning money through bodybuilding, the Mr. Olympia competition is part of Joe Weider’s Olympia Weekend, which is conducted annually through the International Federation of Body Building and Fitness (IFBB). The first Mr. Olympia contest was held in New York City at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Larry Scott won the competition and went on to win the second Mr. Olympia contest the next year. Currently, the longest string of consecutive title wins is eight, a record shared by Lee Haney and Ronnie Coleman. Haney won the Mr. Olympia competition from 1984 through 1991; Ronnie Coleman was named Mr. Olympia from 1998 through 2005. Several notable celebrities launched their careers at Mr. Olympia contests. Louis Jude “Lou” Ferrigno achieved fame in Mr. Olympia competitions and went on to play The Hulk in the CBS series The Incredible Hulk. Arguably the most prestigious Mr. Olympia winner is Arnold Schwarzenegger, whose chiseled physique helped launch a successful action movie career. Presently, Jay Cutler is the reigning Mr. Olympia.
