Tips for a Parent or Guardian of a Child with Cancer
March, 2011
In past years, Ronald Dean Moye has worked with a number of non-profit organizations, including The Blume Pediatric Cancer Center. He became involved in raising money and awareness to benefit children diagnosed with cancer. The following tips represent helpful guidelines for parents or guardians of children affected by cancer.
1. Be truthful. A sick child will not benefit from being misguided. By downplaying the severity or seriousness of their illness, you take away the opportunity to come to terms and deal with their situation in a healthy way. Be gentle, but honest.
2. Know all the facts before informing your child of his or her condition. Talk to the physician at length and do your own research. When explaining, let him or her know it is okay to be upset. Let the child know you will always be there to listen to their thoughts and concerns.
3. Make certain the child knows that they did nothing to cause the disease and that it is not his or her fault. 4. Use laughter as medicine. Try to take out the “doom and gloom” attitude whenever you can. If in the hospital, bring in games, videos, or toys to help brighten up a sterile hospital atmosphere.
5. Get a highly qualified doctor with a good bedside manner to work with your child. A doctor that knows how to deal with children can make a huge difference throughout the stressful and worrisome process of treatments and tests.
6. Don’t forget to care for yourself throughout the ordeal. You must stay in good health in order to provide the best assistance for your child. Get enough sleep, eat healthfully, and take some time for yourself.
7. Always reassure your child with love and support
