  • Drug Testing Protects Employers, Employees from Effects of Substance Abuse, Dr. Roxana Diba

Many employers mandate drug testing as a condition of employment because it enables them to avoid hiring a worker with a substance-abuse problem. Substance abuse in the workplace increases the risk of accidents, absenteeism, and poor performance. A drug test uses scientific means to detect whether a person has recently used illegal drugs, prescription drugs, or alcohol.

Companies most commonly utilize drug testing to preclude the hiring of a person who uses drugs and alcohol on a regular basis. Drug testing also deters existing staff from abusing drugs and alcohol and allows companies to identify employees who might need to be referred to a medical professional for treatment. Because substance abuse can lead to impaired judgment or abilities and, therefore, an increased risk of mistakes or mishaps, drug testing also serves as a means of protecting other employees, the public, and the company as a whole.

Some industries require employers to perform drug tests, while others implement drug-testing policies based on careful consideration by owners or management. A number of court decisions support the use of drug testing by employers.

Urinalysis provides an easy, effective method of testing for drugs. Companies such as A Alliance MDs, PLLC, are available to facilitate drug tests, ensuring the highest level of privacy for the person taking the test as well as accurate, reliable results for the employer. The company safeguards such critical considerations as the chain of custody for handling the specimens, multiple screenings to weed out false positives, a confirmation test if a test comes back with signs of drug or alcohol use, and split samples. A split sample permits multiple tests on a single sample for the purposes of confirmation or further testing.
