When parents grow older and less capable of everyday tasks, it is often difficult to navigate the best route for their care. After my father suffered a cranial hemorrhage, we saw that not all elderly homes are ideal, and I felt lucky to find Senior Helpers, an organization that works to place aging citizens in the best possible situations.

Founded in 1991, Senior Helpers offers a variety of avenues to improve and sustain the quality of life of senior citizens. A viable alternative to elderly homes or assisted living communities, Senior Helpers links participants with experienced, capable caregivers who strive to accommodate various needs. Senior Helpers first connects the senior with a registered nurse, who ascertains their physical and mental needs; then, Senior Helpers joins the senior with a caregiver whose experience and skills are just the right fit for the situation.

Depending on the client, the caregiver may assist with tasks including cooking, errand running, bathing, housekeeping, bill paying and shopping. In addition to helping with chores and necessary tasks, the caregiver also functions as a friend; many patrons of Senior Helpers are pleased to gain a companion for games, films, and other activities.

Senior Helpers is committed to the safety and health of all involved seniors, and as such all caregivers and employees are thoroughly screened and trained. Each senior assistant undergoes a criminal background check and completes coursework at Senior Helpers University. The educational process includes classes in Alzheimer’s and Dementia and common risk factors, and participants are required to engage in a minimum of eight educational modules per year. Dedicated to improving the lives of seniors, Senior Helpers, based in Tampa, Florida, serves the surrounding cities of Land O Lakes, Lutz, Seffner, Thonotassa, and Zephyrhills. As a dog lover, I support a number of Florida pet-focused nonprofits, including the Humane Society of Tampa Bay and the Tampa Bay North Shore Animal League. Another organization that I support, the Rhodesian Ridgeback Rescue, Inc. (RRRInc), focuses its efforts on a single breed of canine. A native of South Africa, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is distinguished by a ridge of fur along its spine, and was originally bred as a hunting dog on the African veldt With the temperament of a hound, the Rhodesian Ridgeback rarely barks and is gentle with humans. At the same time, it is highly alert in the presence of danger and makes an excellent watchdog. These protective instincts do mean that Rhodesian Ridgeback is not for everyone: without proper obedience training, the dog can become a nuisance. Many of the dogs for which RRRInc finds adoptive homes are given up for reasons having to with divorce or a major move. At the same time, a significant percentage of these dogs did not receive proper training from their owners and developed behavioral issues.

As the official rescue program of the
Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of the United States, Inc., RRRInc
obtains many of its dogs from animal shelters or as abandoned strays. Before the organization seeks an adoptive home for rescued dogs, the animals are placed in a foster home situation with RRRInc volunteers. This allows the dogs’ individual characters to be evaluated as well as their suitability for placement. Some rescue dogs come from abusive backgrounds and require special attention from owners with the necessary patience, discipline, and a willingness to give extra effort in caring for their canine companion. For those wanting to explore adopting a rescue dog, the Rhodesian Ridgeback Rescue, Inc. website offers numerous informational resources, as well as an online application form.
