  • Savio Thattil: Overview of the History of Java Programming Language
    October, 2011
Technology executive Savio Thattil has served as Director of Technology for the e-commerce division at Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., for six years. Fluent in a number of programming languages including Java, C, and C++, he describes the history of Java and why it holds the rank of the world’s top programming language.

In June of 1991, James Gosling, Mike Sheridan, and Patrick Naughton embarked on the Java language project. At first meant to facilitate communication between such entertainment devices as video cassette recorders and video game consoles, it proved too advanced for the television industry at the time. The software was originally named Oak for a tree growing outside of James Gosling’s office.

During this time, the Internet was rapidly growing and expected to become a mainstream media source. Therefore, the programmers changed focus, altering the product for compatibility with the newly-established World Wide Web. After the launch of WebRunner Accelerator, a web browser that utilized Oak, the developers changed the name Oak to Java and WebRunner to HotJava.

The first official public launch of the Java language took place in 1995, becoming extremely popular as more and more web browsers enabled the ability to run Java applets. Expanding upon its predecessor, Java 2 was released in December of 1998 and incorporated different versions to ensure compatibility with a range of platforms.

Today, Java arguably remains the top programming language in the world due to attributes such as free use of the product, memory management, and platform independence, meaning that once written, the same application can be used in an array of environments.
