Mr. Scott Cathcart is a graduate of the University of Virginia (UVa), where he studied advertising and communications.

President Thomas Jefferson began speaking about the establishment of a new college in Virginia as early as 1800. By 1817, he had secured land for the school from James Monroe and, in January 1819, the Commonwealth of Virginia charted the new university. A true liberal arts school, UVa offers a diverse range of programs, including Astronomy, Political Science, Philosophy, Botany, and Architecture, in addition to traditional disciplines like Law and Medicine. In 1836, UVa opened a School of Engineering and Applied Science, the first in the country to be fully integrated with an existing institution.

Today, UVa remains one of the country’s finest public institutions and admission is extremely competitive. For several years in a row, U.S. News & World Report has ranked UVA second among all public universities nationwide. UVa is home to an impressive faculty, including Fulbright and Guggenheim fellows, several National Endowment for the Humanities fellows, and a Nobel laureate. Professor Larry J. Sabato has become a national icon as a political scientist and analyst, and Professor Julian bond has served as the Chairman of the NAACP for more than a decade.

Among the many prominent alumni of UVa are Edgar Allen Poe, Georgia O’Keeffe, Katie Couric, Tina Fey, President Woodrow Wilson, Senator Ted Kennedy, and Robert F. Kennedy.

The Virginia Cavaliers compete in Division I of the Atlantic Coast Conference and have won 15 national championships in the past 3 decades. UVa is distinguished by its lacrosse, cross country, soccer, and basketball teams. The school’s football team regularly plays in bowl games and enjoys high draft picks in the NFL.

Lauded as one of the world’s largest marathon events, the New York City Marathon has been conducted annually since its inception in 1970. An extremely popular race, the New York City Marathon attracts tens of thousands every year, and it is organized by New York Road Runners (NYRR) and sponsored by ING, a financial group. Due to its popularity, the New York City Marathon chooses competitors based on a lottery system. Other prospective participants may try for a spot by joining the NYRR and meeting NYRR-set qualifications, or via nomination given by official running organizations.

Running enthusiast Scott Cathcart has completed the New York City Marathon twice, in 1997 and again in 2004. A varied and crowded course, the New York City Marathon spans all five New York City boroughs. Over the course of the marathon, racers will receive a whirlwind tour of NYC as they run through Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, The Bronx, Central Park, and finally the Tavern on the Green, where the race concludes.

As is the case with his mainstay race, the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon in San Francisco, Scott Cathcart approaches the New York City Marathon with a combination of preparation, poise, and endurance. In 1997, running his first marathon ever, Scott Cathcart was determined to break the magical “under-three-hours” mark at the New York City Marathon. Through a mixture of cold and rain, Scott was able to achieve his goal, and completed the 1997 NYC Marathon in 2 hours, fifty-six minutes and forty-two seconds (2:56:42). In 1997 he finished an impressive 552nd place out of 30,501 finishers. Out of 36,513 finishers in 2004, Scott Cathcart finished in 705th place. Scott Cathcart’s final time was three hours, six minutes and 32 seconds, earning him another qualifying entrance into the legendary Boston Marathon, where he also broke 3 hours with a 2:56:34 in 2001.
