A widely respected expert in health care management, Dr. Sean Tunis brings years of experience in public policy and medical research to his current role as the Director of the Center for Medical Technology Policy (CMTP).
A respected thought leader in the field of health care policy creation, Dr. Sean Tunis has held a number of important positions at leading government and non-profit organizations throughout the course of his career. Since 2006, Dr. Sean Tunis has served as the Director of the Center for Medical Technology Policy (CMTP). The organization, which Dr. Sean Tunis founded with initial funding from the California HealthCare Foundation and Blue Shield of California Foundation, endeavors to advance our understanding of the risks, benefits, and costs of new medical technologies by improving the processes by which medical research is conducted. Dr. Sean Tunis began CMTP after several years of high-level work in Washington, D.C. From 2000-2005, Dr. Sean Tunis contributed a number of significant improvements to the U.S. Medicare and Medicaid systems as the Chief Medical Officer and Director of the Office of Clinical Standards and Quality for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). In this role, Dr. Sean Tunis was responsible for developing national coverage policies and quality standards for the Medicare and Medicaid Programs, creating functional tools for quality measurement and public reporting, and initiating the CMS Quality Improvement Organization program. Prior to becoming Chief Medical Officer and Director of the Office of Clinical Standards and Quality for CMS, Dr. Sean Tunis served the organization as the Director of the Coverage and Analysis Group. Apart from CMS, Dr. Sean Tunis has held positions as a policy advisor to the U.S. Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources and as the Director of the Health Program at the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment. Dr. Sean Tunis attended medical school at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Tunis also attended Stanford University for his Master’s degree in Health Services Research. Dr. Sean Tunis began his education as an undergraduate at Cornell University, where he double majored in Biology and the History of Science.
