Spinal Cord Stimulation Treats Pain with Electronic Pulses, Dr. Sebastian Lattuga
December, 2011
by Dr. Sebastian Lattuga
Doctors often recommend spinal cord stimulation to patients with chronic or acute back pain. The treatment involves implanting a small electrical device in the abdomen or buttock. The device includes tiny wires that run to the epidural space surrounding the spine. The device delivers low-voltage electronic pulses to help block nerve receptors and relieve pain. Dr. Sebastian Lattuga, a New York spine surgeon, recommends this treatment to some patients who experience persistent back pain or numbness due to injury or disease.
While every patient’s situation is different, Dr. Sebastian Lattuga often suggests that patients try a trial stimulator before undergoing permanent surgery. During a trial stimulator procedure, he inserts the device just under the skin. If the patient experiences relief from the earlier symptoms, he schedules surgery for a permanent device with a long-lasting battery.
After surgery, Dr. Lattuga monitors the patient’s progress over a period of time. Some patients use the stimulator for just a short time once a day, but others may benefit from several prolonged periods of treatment each day.
