From an early age, Dr. Sharon Moalem distinguished himself from his peers by his unique and creative approach to scientific discovery. Sharon Moalem earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology and Art History from the University of Guelph in Canada. While there, his paper describing the symptoms of sick bees earned him the Boyes Apiculture Scholarship. Dr. Moalem then earned his medical degree at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. There, he received the Burrill Crohn Research Award, which awarded him $50,000 to investigate the causes of Crohn’s disease. In 2003, he earned his PhD from the University of Toronto, where he made a number of important discoveries in the field of evolutionary genetics.

Dr. Moalem was the youngest-ever associate editor of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease at the time of his appointment. In 2005, Dr. Moalem co-founded a biotechnology company focusing on developing antimicrobial compounds to use against superbug infections. Dr. Moalem is also the Chief Executive Officer and Director of Research and Development for a biotechnology company that he founded to develop handheld diagnostic aids for genetic conditions.

Dr. Moalem’s work has brought him much public attention. He is a New York Times bestselling author, and has appeared on The Daily Show, the Today Show, and Good Morning America.

Throughout his life, Dr. Sharon Moalem has provided assistance to those in need. Before earning his MD, he helped organize HIV prevention programs in Bangkok, Thailand. In his free time, Dr. Moalem enjoys practicing Japanese archery, kendo, a Japanese fencing sport; and Ikebana, a Japanese art of flower arranging.
