Iconic English writer C. S. (Clive Staples) Lewis
May, 2011
Iconic English writer C. S. (Clive Staples) Lewis is known as much for his fantastical novels as he is for his work as a literary critic and Christian apologist. Some of C. S. Lewis’ best-known works include The Chronicles of Narnia, The Allegory of Love, and Surprised by Joy: The Shape of My Early Life. A lifelong scholar, Lewis received highest honors in three areas of study while at the University of Oxford.
After serving in the British Army during World War I and later completing his education, Lewis began teaching as a fellow at the University of Oxford Magdalen College, where he remained for almost 30 years. He also later served as Professor of Medieval and Renaissance English at the University of Cambridge. Over the course of his career, Lewis became good friends with other prolific and well-known writers, including J.R.R. Tolkien, Lord David Cecil, Charles Williams, Nevill Coghill, and Owen Barfield. Together, with Lewis’ brother, Warren, the group became The Inklings, an informal society that met to discuss literature, culture, and religion. Later in his life, Lewis became known as Christian apologist and wrote many essays on the topic.
Although he declared himself an atheist at 15 years old, Lewis later reconnected with his faith after being influenced by religious debates with Tolkien, as well as G. K. Chesterton’s The Everlasting Man and the works of George MacDonald. After converting back to Christianity, Lewis became a committed Anglican, eventually writing extensively on the topic of Christian apologetics, the creation of a rational basis for Christianity. In addition, Christianity became a theme in many of Lewis’ more mainstream novels, including The Chronicles of Narnia and The Space Trilogy. In his book Mere Christianity, one of the most highly regarded works on Christian apologetics, Lewis argued that Jesus Christ was more than a moral guide for his followers; he was actually God. The passage detailing his theory became known as “Lewis’s Trilemma,” and has been used in many arguments by Christian apologetic writers, such as Josh McDowell.
C. S. Lewis died on November 22, 1963, the same day as the death of fellow writer Aldous Huxley and the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The pattern of events inspired Peter Kreeft’s book Between Heaven and Hell: A Dialog Somewhere Beyond Death with John F. Kennedy, C. S. Lewis, & Aldous Huxley. The Times ranked Lewis 11th on the list of “50 Greatest British Writers since 1945.”
